How to Prepare Bank Statements for a Student Visa

The most familiar document in the whole file, and still the one most often submitted wrong.

A bank statement is the most familiar document in the entire file, and also the one where small formatting mistakes cause the most delay. The account balance is rarely the problem, how the statement is issued, dated and read as a continuous record usually is.

What makes a statement acceptable

  • Issued or stamped by the bank itself, not a personal printout from online banking alone
  • Covers a continuous period with no missing months in between
  • Account holder's name matches exactly with the applicant's or sponsor's other documents
  • Shows a running balance, not just a summary total
  • Recent, most embassies want the latest statement dated close to submission

Statement vs. balance confirmation letter

These are two different documents doing two different jobs. The statement shows transaction history over time, deposits, withdrawals, the pattern of how the account is actually used. The balance confirmation letter is a short, separately issued letter from the bank stating the current balance as of a specific date, sometimes with an auto-renewal clause if it's tied to a fixed deposit. Most files need both, not one instead of the other.

The pattern matters as much as the total

A case officer reading six months of statements is looking for a believable pattern: regular salary credits, ordinary household spending, a savings balance that grows steadily. A string of large, round-number deposits with no matching withdrawal history, or a balance that jumps sharply a few weeks before the application, reads as exactly what it looks like, money moved in specifically for the visa, and usually triggers a source-of-funds request.

Combining accounts

If funds are split across a current account and a savings account, or between the student and a sponsor, submit statements for each and be ready to explain how they relate. A short covering note listing which account funds which part of the requirement saves a case officer from having to guess.

If your bank issues statements in Sinhala or Tamil

Most Sri Lankan banks can issue an English-language statement or certificate on request, which is the simpler route. Where that's not possible, the statement needs a certified translation to English submitted alongside the original, formatted to A4 and scanned as a PDF like every other document in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a mobile banking app screenshot instead of an official statement?+

No. Embassies expect a bank-issued document, either printed and stamped at a branch or downloaded as an official PDF statement through online banking, not a screenshot of an app balance screen.

What if there's an unusually large deposit in my statements?+

It doesn't automatically cause a problem, but it does need an explanation. If the deposit came from a salary bonus, a property or vehicle sale, or a loan, pair the statement with the relevant source-of-funds document rather than leaving it unexplained.

Do joint account statements work the same way?+

Generally yes, provided the relationship between the account holders is documented and, where relevant, the other holder's consent to use the funds is included. We check this against your specific bank's format during your review.
